CVS (chorion villus sampling) pregnancy test is an invasive prenatal test that obtain the examination of chorionic villi. That is a small part of placental tissue which is necessary to detect chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, trisomy 13, trisomy 18, and sex chromosome abnormalities (such as Turner syndrome and Klinefelter syndrome). The test is more than 99 % accurate in diagnosing these conditions. The cells from placental tissue originate from the same cells as those of the baby, so that makes this test conclusive.

CVS pregnancy test

CVS pregnancy test can be done with local anesthesia or without anesthesia. A fine needle is then passed through the mother’s abdomen and a sample of villi is taken. The needle is carefully observed using ultrasound scan. It only takes 1 minute and than is made ultrasound scan to be sure that the condition of the baby is good and check that the fetal heart beat is normal.

The main advantage of CVS over amniocentesis is that it can be done earlier — generally between 11 and 13 weeks of pregnancy (For an amniocentesis at least 16 weeks pregnancy is required.) Some studies have shown that when CVS is performed before 10 weeks there is a small risk of abnormality in the baby’s fingers and/or toes. To avoid this risk CVS test should never be perform before 11th week.

In approximately 1% of cases the invasive test will need to be repeated because the results are inconclusive.

After the procedure the patient should take it easy for the rest of the day, avoid any heavy lifting, intercourse, and air travel for the next two or three days.

If some cramping and light bleeding over the next day is present the patient should consult a doctor. These are relatively common and in the vast majority of cases the pregnancy continues without any problems. You may find it helpful to take simple painkillers like paracetamol. Significant cramping or vaginal spotting, or you’re leaking amniotic fluid could be signs impending miscarriage so the doctor should be called immediately. The risk of miscarriage due to CVS is about 1% and this is the same as the risk from amniocentesis at 16 weeks.

The results for Down’s syndrome and other major chromosomal defects are usually available within 7-10 days. If there are a chromosomal abnormalities the best decision is to terminate the pregnancy. But you are offered genetic counseling so that you can get more information and discuss your options. Some women decide to continue if it`s compatible with life.
